Exploring White Privilege in New England--Friday 10/14/16

After nearly two decades of expanding national impact, a regional model of the White Privilege Conference will be offered for the first time in New England. Lesley University will host the White Privilege Symposium/New England (WPS/NE) on Oct.14-15, 2016.

Both sessions will be introduced and hosted live by Debby Irving, Racial Justice Educator & Writer. Irving is the author of Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race.

These sessions will examine the impact of racial and cultural oppression along with ways to work for equity and social justice with a particular emphasis on New England history and environment.

There is no fee, although registration through Eventbrite is required and you must bring your ticket(s) for admission to each session.

About the White Privilege Symposium New England (WPS/NE) and National Conference

The White Privilege Symposium New England (WPS/NE) is a project of the nonprofit The Privilege Institute (TPI), and is organized by a local host team and sponsors. WPS/NE has attracted a diverse audience of authors, educators and students, parents, community leaders and consultants who work on issues of equity and social justice.

This fifth such regional gathering in North America complements 18 years of national conference gathering at the White Privilege Conference (WPC). Selling out weeks in advance, the most recent annual White Privilege Conference attracted 3,000 attendees in Philadelphia in April. TPI is responding to growing demand with regional conferences across the U.S. and Canada. Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York City have hosted successful regional symposiums. This fall, Ontario and New England will add to the growing list by bringing the WPC brand to their area.

The national conference is a consistently powerful gathering designed to move professionals and learners from diversity and inclusion frameworks to models that comprehensively challenge white supremacy’s multiple and entwined forms of oppression. These events fuel longtime practitioners by offering cutting-edge thinking, current trends, and groundbreaking initiatives. Past conference programs can be found here.

Regional symposiums offer a shorter, more affordable way to experience WPC’s straightforward approach to challenging power and privilege, specifically in their region. The planning and gathering process of regional symposiums also creates a collaborative project that fosters connections, knowledge downloads, and inspiration that lives on far beyond the conference.
